Oral Examinations
It is recommended to have oral exams regularly, ideally twice a year, in order for your dentist to detect any potential oral health issues and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
When you have your dental exam, the dentist will thoroughly check the health of your teeth, gums, jaw, and bite. The exam may also include dental X-rays, a screening for oral cancer, and other diagnostic tests.
Oral Cancer Screening
During a dental examination, it is crucial to look out for any signs of oral cancer that may affect any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues.
The dentist will thoroughly inspect the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums to detect any indications of oral cancer, which can be difficult to identify with the naked eye.
Oral Health Care at Home
To keep your smile healthy between dental appointments, be sure to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, and floss at least once a day.
Dental Hygiene Cleaning
During your dental exam, your dental hygienist will conduct a comprehensive cleaning of your teeth and gums to prevent and treat dental diseases.
The cleaning process involves removing tartar and plaque buildup using a scaler, followed by using a polisher and coarse toothpaste to eliminate any remaining stains or plaque. Lastly, your teeth and gums will be thoroughly flossed.
Fluoride Treatment
If you or your child are at a high risk of tooth decay, your dentist may suggest a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral that aids in rebuilding the minerals in your tooth enamel, thus preventing or reversing tooth decay.
